BIG
BROWN
Lou's pick for the
Triple Crown!

With 18 days gone and just three days to go until the
Belmont Stakes Saturday,
Big Brown jockey Kent Desormeaux finally is showing some wear.
He arrived at a Manhattan news conference yesterday to flog the
potential history-making race wearing a sharp pinstriped suit and
sunglasses, and he did his best to be a quote machine, same as ever.
The telltale sign that the grinding wait is getting to Desormeaux
was he hadn't shaved.
Desormeaux is in the stretch run now on a lot of levels. Now 38,
he's been riding professionally for 22 years, long enough to know
"once we cross under that wire on Saturday all of this goes away."
So he's trying to do a lot of things at once.
He's trying to make Big Brown the 12th
Triple Crown winner, and avoid a repeat of what he considers a
flawed ride atop Real Quiet in the 1998 Belmont, the only other time
in his Hall of Fame career he was in position to sweep the three
classics.
He's trying to accomplish this feat before his youngest son
Jacob's rapidly deteriorating sight fades away forever.
He believes all of it has prepared him for this latest stretch
run.
Asked what he'll do if he and Big Brown come flying out of Belmont's
final turn neck and neck with some rival, Desormeaux's eyes widened
and he half-squealed, "What do you do?"
His entire life has prepared him for this. He slaps the table.
"You ride," Desormeaux said.

Lou watches them cross the wire at
Hollywood Park.
